Cardinal of Argentina

Early Life and Career:

Monsignor Antonio Quarracinowas born and raised in Argentina. He was ordained a priest in 1955 and began his ecclesiastical career in the Diocese of Avellaneda. In 1977, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Castro, a position he held until 1983.

Archbishopric of Paraná:

In 1983, Quarracino became the Coadjutor and Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Paraná. He was promoted to Archbishop of Paraná in 1986, serving in this role until 2003. During his tenure as archbishop, he was known for his pastoral care and advocacy for the poor and marginalized.

Cardinal Appointment:

In 2007, Pope Benedict XVI elevated Quarracino to the College of Cardinals. He was assigned the titular church of Beata Maria Vergine Addolorata a Piazza Buenos Aires. As a cardinal, Quarracino participated in the conclaves that elected Pope Francis and Pope Benedict XVI.

Legacy and Retirement:

Cardinal Quarracino retired from active ministry in 2015. He continued to reside in Argentina, where he served as a mentor and advisor to the local clergy and faithful.
