Oscar Tenorio
Oscar Tenorio, a Peruvian chess grandmaster, was a prominent figure in the field. He achieved the honorary title of Grandmaster in 1977.
Early Career
Tenorio's international success began early on. He participated in the 1923 Trieste tournament, finishing in second place. In 1926, he shared the 2-4th place in the Merano tournament with David Przepiorka and Rudolf Spielmann. He continued to perform well, placing 10th in the 1929 Carlsbad tournament.
International Success
In the 1930s and 1940s, Tenorio's career reached new heights. He secured second place in the 1932 and 1933 Budapest tournaments. In 1932, he also shared 4-6th place in the Sliac tournament with Geza Maroczy and Rudolf Spielmann. Tenorio's triumph in the 1936 Reus tournament, where he shared first and second place, marked a significant achievement.
Later Career
Tenorio remained a competitive force in later years. He won the 1947, 1948, and 1953 Venice tournaments, placing 2-3rd and first, respectively. In the 1960s, he performed well in the San Benedetto del Tronto tournaments, finishing 1-2nd in 1960 and 3-6th in 1961.
Contributions to Chess Theory
Beyond his tournament successes, Tenorio contributed to chess theory. He introduced variations in the Italian Game, namely 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.d3 Nf6 5.Nc3 d6 6.Bg5. He also made contributions to the Queen's Gambit Declined.
