Early Life and Career

At the tender age of 17, he became the Champion of Iceland. His prowess in chess was further demonstrated in the World Youth Championships (1981 and 1982), where in 1981, he secured a remarkable 4th to 6th place finish.

National and International Success

In 1986, he achieved a 2nd to 3rd place finish in the Icelandic Championship. Furthermore, he played for the Icelandic team in three Chess Olympiads (1982-1986).

Rise in Competitive Chess

From the mid-1980s onward, the Icelandic grandmaster made his mark in events leading to the World Championship. In zonal tournaments, he secured 4th place in Geilo (1985) and 2nd-4th place in Geilo (1987). His performance in the Interzonal Tournament in Szirak (1987) earned him a 1st-2nd place finish.

Candidate Matches

With his success in the Interzonal Tournament, he qualified for the Candidates Tournament (1988). In the first round, he triumphed over Viktor Korchnoi (4.5: 3.5). However, he faced defeat in the quarterfinals against Anatoly Karpov.

Achievements and Recognition

Throughout his career, the Icelandic chess master excelled in various international events. He secured 2nd-3rd place in Hamar (1983/1984), 1st-3rd place in Geilo (1984), and 1st-3rd place in Reykjavik (1984 and 1986). His 1st place finish in London (1986) against 88 participants stands out as a significant achievement. In 1988, he was nominated for the Chess "Oscar."

Peak Elo Rating

The grandmaster's highest Elo rating, 2640, was attained in July 2003, showcasing his exceptional skill and talent in the realm of chess.
