Esther Ralston was an American actress who gained immense popularity during the era of silent films. With her vibrant and incredibly beautiful appearance, she became known as "The American Venus" after the release of a film with the same name in 1926.
Early Life
Esther Worth was born on September 17, 1902, in Bar Harbor, Maine. Her parents were vaudeville performers, and Esther was practically born on the road during one of their touring trips. She began appearing on stage with her father, mother, and four brothers in burlesque and vaudeville shows when she was just 2 years old. The family act was called "The Ralston Family with Baby Esther, America's Youngest Juliet."
Rise to Fame
At the age of 13, Esther made her debut in the film "The Deep Purple." However, it was not until 1924, with her role as Mrs. Darling in the film adaptation of James Barrie's "Peter Pan," that she reached the height of her fame. Over the course of her career, Esther appeared in 97 films and 4 television series, with her active years spanning from 1920 to 1940.
Popularity and Success
During the late 1920s, Esther Ralston became one of the highest-paid stars of silent cinema. She made numerous films for Paramount Pictures, and at times, her earnings reached $8,000 per week. Her popularity was incredible, especially in Britain, where her photographs were featured on postcards in various languages.

Esther Ralston primarily starred in comedies, often portraying lively and charming upper-class girls. However, her dramatic performances also garnered excellent reviews. Her most famous roles include Mrs. Darling in "Peter Pan" (1924), the Fairy Godmother in "A Kiss for Cinderella" (1925), and Helen Lee in the television drama "Our Five Daughters" (1962).
Later Career and Personal Life
In 1932, Esther briefly worked in Britain before returning to Hollywood and signing a contract with MGM. However, she left the film industry in 1941. There were rumors that she turned down advances from influential Hollywood magnate Louis B. Mayer, which led to her being assigned to lower-budget films and a decline in her career. Despite this, Esther Ralston continued to perform on stage and in radio productions. Eventually, she found employment as a salesperson in a major department store and gradually rose to a managerial position, showcasing her surprising talent. She expressed contentment with how her life turned out and had no regrets or desire to return to acting.
Esther Ralston was married three times and had three children. She passed away on January 14, 1994, at the age of 91 in Ventura, California. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in recognition of her contributions to the film industry.
