Esther Wojcicki: A Pioneer in Education and Media
Early Life and EducationEsther Wojcicki is an American journalist, educator, and Vice Chair of the Creative Commons Advisory Board. She holds a Bachelor's degree in English and Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley. She also earned a journalism teaching credential from Berkeley, an M.A. in French from San Jose State University, and an M. Ed. in Educational Technology from the same institution.
Teaching Career
Wojcicki began her career in 1984 as an English and Journalism teacher at Palo Alto High School. She developed the school's journalism program into one of the largest in the nation. She taught journalism workshops throughout Northern California and was named California Teacher of the Year in 2002.
Leadership and Advisory Roles
Wojcicki served on the University of California's President's Committee on Curriculum and helped revise the state's middle and high school journalism curriculum. She is a trustee of the Research Center for Child Development and a member of the Board of Directors of the Alliance for Excellent Education. She chairs the board of Learning Matters and is on the advisory board of THNK School of Creative Leadership.
Honors and Awards
Wojcicki has received numerous awards, including the Golden Key from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in 2009. She holds honorary doctorates from Palo Alto University (2013) and Rhode Island School of Design (2016).
Entrepreneurial Ventures
Wojcicki founded the Journalism Education Initiative at the University of Oregon's School of Communication and Education in 2016. She is also the founder of the Moonshots in Education Movement (MiE).
Personal Life
Wojcicki is married to Stanford University professor Stan Wojcicki. They have three daughters: Susan (CEO of YouTube), Janet (anthropologist and researcher), and Anne (co-founder of 23andMe).
