Ettore Fieramosca: A Legendary Italian Condottiero

Early Life and Career

Ettore Fieramosca was born in Capua, Italy in 1476. In 1492, he joined the service of King Ferdinand II of Naples, who fought alongside French King Charles VIII in the Italian Wars. Fieramosca distinguished himself in 1497 during the defense of the fortress of Offida in Fermo, alongside his brother Guido.

The Battle of Cerignola and the Barletta Duel

In 1502, Fieramosca fought in Apulia against the French, under the command of Prospero and Fabrizio Colonna. In 1503, he participated in the Battle of Cerignola alongside Spanish general Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba y Aguilar.

After the victory at Cerignola, a French commander named Charles de la Motte made disparaging remarks about the Neapolitan soldiers. Fieramosca challenged him to a duel, known as the "Tournament of Barletta." The duel, which took place on August 13, 1503, near the fortress of Barletta in southern Italy, was to decide the outcome of the entire military campaign. In a fierce battle, 13 confident French knights faced off against 13 Italians led by Fieramosca. The Italians emerged victorious, with Charles de la Motte surrendering to Fieramosca.

Honors and Legacy

For his valor, Fieramosca was awarded the title of Count of Milionico and feudal fiefdoms. A statue was erected in Barletta in his honor, which was destroyed by Napoleon's invading forces in 1805 and later restored in 1846. During the Italian Risorgimento, Fieramosca's legend grew, and his image became romanticized. In 1833, Italian author and politician Massimo d'Azeglio celebrated Fieramosca in his novel of the same name. Feature films about his life were released in 1915 and 1938.

Later History and Honors

During World War II, an ocean-going submarine named "Ettore Fieramosca" was commissioned. It is worth noting that there are some errors and inaccuracies in the original text.
