Career in the Romanian Air Force
In 1938-1939, Ion Ghica commanded the "Aurel Vlaicu" Air Force School in Bucharest, named after the first Romanian aviator. From 1941-1944, he led the 1st Romanian Air Corps on the Soviet-German front. For his contributions, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross by Germany on May 10, 1944.
Arrest of Ion Antonescu
On August 23, 1944, following the orders of King Michael, General Ghica played a pivotal role in arresting the Romanian head of state, Ion Antonescu, who was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross.
Leadership of the Romanian Air Force
From September 18, 1944, to March 11, 1945, Ghica headed the Romanian Air Force. Subsequently, from August 1, 1945, he served as Deputy Secretary of the Romanian Ministry of Aviation.
Recognition and Arrest
General Ghica received the Soviet Order of Suvorov on August 9, 1945. However, following the establishment of a communist regime in Romania, he was arrested and sentenced to death by a people's court on July 13, 1949.
