Biography of Tomas Venclova

Early Life and Exile

Tomas Venclova was born in Klaipėda, Lithuania, in 1937. His parents were repressed and exiled to Siberia, where Venclova spent part of his childhood. In 1962, the family returned to Lithuania.

Education and Career

Venclova graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics at Vilnius University in 1983. From 1990 to 2000, he worked at the Institute of Culture and Art. Between 1994 and 2002, he led the international programs of the Lithuanian Writers' Union. Since 2003, he has been editor-in-chief of the English-language literary magazine "The Vilnius Review."

Literary Works

Venclova is a renowned Lithuanian poet who has published numerous books of verse.

Non-Fiction and Translations

In addition to his poetry, Venclova has also written collections of essays on postmodern culture. He has translated the works of renowned authors such as Zbigniew Herbert, Wisława Szymborska, Antun Dobrec, Derek Walcott, Merab Mamardashvili, Susan Sontag, Jean-François Lyotard, and others.

International Recognition

Venclova's writings have been translated into many European languages and have been published in the United States, Germany, Sweden, Bulgaria, and Russia. His work has earned him international recognition and numerous awards.
