Johannes Gerberger

Johannes Gerberger was a German poet and theologian.

In 1590, Gerberger became a deacon, and in 1599, he was appointed chief pastor of St. Mary's Church in Wschowa. During his time there, Melchior Teschner served as the church's cantor.

Religious Persecution and Exile

In 1607, Gerberger was expelled from St. Mary's Church for his Lutheran beliefs. Undeterred, he established a prayer house in Wschowa called "Kripplein Christi."

Plague and Hymnwriting

During the devastating plague outbreak in Silesia in 1613, Gerberger penned the hymn "Valet will ich dir geben," which became a poignant expression of mortality and hope.
