Biography of Eva Rubinstein
Eva Rubinstein was an American ballerina, actress, and photographer. She was born in Paris, France, to a family of Polish classical ballerina Anela Mlynarska and pianist Arthur Rubinstein. Growing up, Eva moved frequently with her parents, and they spoke Polish at home. Later, she learned French and then English.
At the age of five, Eva began studying ballet with Matilda Kshesinskaya. In 1939, her family moved to the United States, and Eva continued her ballet training in Los Angeles and later in New York under the guidance of George Balanchine. She performed on the ballet stage and also appeared in several films.
Marriage and Activism
In 1956, Eva married the clergyman and civil rights activist William Sloane Coffin. Together, they participated in protest demonstrations. They had three children before divorcing in 1968.
Photography Career
In 1967, Eva Rubinstein began pursuing photography. She studied the art of photography under Lisette Model and Diane Arbus. Her first solo album was released in 1974. From 1977 to 1984, she taught at the New School for Social Research in New York City.
Eva Rubinstein worked as a photojournalist and specialized in still life, portraits, and nude photography. She gained recognition for her series of photographs depicting her father's hometown, Łódź. Her personal exhibitions were held in various countries around the world, including the United States, France, Spain, Italy, and Poland.
