Early Life and Education

Evgeny Arye, an acclaimed Israeli theatre director, was born in Moscow in 1947. After completing his undergraduate studies in psychology at Moscow State University, he enrolled at the Leningrad Institute of Theatre, Music, and Cinematography (LGITMiK) under the tutelage of renowned director Georgy Tovstonogov.

Career in the Soviet Union

Upon graduating from LGITMiK, Arye worked in various prestigious theaters in Leningrad and Moscow, including the Bolshoi Drama Theatre (BDT), the Maly Drama Theatre, and the Mayakovsky Theatre. He also directed television productions, showcasing his exceptional talent in both stage and screen. His production of "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" at the Mayakovsky Theatre garnered significant recognition in the Soviet theater community.

Emigration to Israel and Founding of Gesher Theatre

Despite his successful career in the Soviet Union, Arye applied for emigration to Israel in 1980, only to face rejection without explanation. In 1988, after directing a memorial evening honoring Solomon Mikhoels, he met Natan Sharansky, a prominent Soviet activist. Sharansky invited Arye to visit Israel and consider establishing a new theater there.

Building Gesher Theatre: A New Home for the Arts

With the support of the Zionist Forum and a group of prominent Israeli intellectuals, Arye founded the Gesher Theatre. The establishment of a "Russian" theater in Israel generated immense excitement and support. The government extended its patronage, enabling Gesher to flourish as a cultural hub.

International Acclaim and Educational Contributions

Under Arye's artistic direction, Gesher Theatre has embarked on numerous successful international tours, showcasing its groundbreaking productions. His work has garnered prestigious awards and accolades both in Israel and abroad. In addition to his theatrical pursuits, Arye has held teaching positions at the Tel Aviv University and New York University, nurturing the next generation of theater artists.
