Early Life and Education
Evgeny Pavlovich Brandis was born in Moscow on April 16, 1916, to Pavel and Maria Brandis. He attended school in Shuya before moving to Leningrad in 1928, where he completed his education at the First Model School and enrolled in a factory school. In 1939, he graduated from the philological faculty of Leningrad State University.
Career
After completing his studies, Brandis worked at the M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin State Public Library. He became one of the pioneers of Soviet science fiction and published numerous books, articles, and essays on the history and themes of science fiction. He also wrote on the works of individual authors in the genre.
Publications
Brandis's publications include over ten books and approximately one hundred articles and essays. He was a member of the USSR Writers' Union and an honorary member of the Jules Verne Society in France.
Family Life
Brandis was married twice. His first wife, Kira Kulikova, was a children's writer and theater critic. His second wife, Nina Tsalik, was a translator who worked on works by Jules Verne, Georges Simenon, and others. He had one daughter, Marianna, who was a literary translator.
Trial of I. Z. Serman
Brandis and his wife were university friends of I. Z. Serman. In 1949, they served as key witnesses for the prosecution during Serman's trial.
