Early Life and Education
Evgeny Korniychuk is a prominent Ukrainian politician and lawyer who has served as a member of the Ukrainian Parliament and held important positions within the government. He was born in Minsk, Belarus, and graduated from the Minsk Higher Military-Political School in 1987. Subsequently, he pursued a legal career, earning a law degree from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv in 1996 and a Master of Laws from Southern Methodist University in Texas, USA, two years later.
Military and Diplomatic Career
Korniychuk served in the Soviet military from 1987 to 1992. After Ukraine's independence, he transitioned into diplomacy, working as a senior consultant for the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice from 1992 to 2000 and as a consul in New York City during that period. Additionally, he held the position of secretary to Judge Jerry Buchmeyer of the Supreme Court of Texas from 1997 to 1998.
Legal Career
Upon returning to Ukraine, Korniychuk became the head of the international treaties department within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also served as a professor at the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and became a senior partner in the legal firm "Master & Partners."
Political Career
Korniychuk's political career began in 2005 when he became the chairman of the Ukrainian Social Democratic Party (USDP). In 2006, he was elected to the Kyiv City Council and became the leader of the USDP's Kyiv organization.
He was subsequently elected as a member of the Ukrainian Parliament in 2006, representing the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc. During his tenure, he served as the First Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Legal Policy. He resigned from Parliament in 2007 to take up a government position.
Korniychuk was re-elected to Parliament in 2007, this time as part of Yulia Tymoshenko's Bloc.
Scandal and Legal Troubles
In 2010, Korniychuk was arrested by the Ukrainian General Prosecutor's Office on corruption charges related to his time as First Deputy Minister of Justice. The charges were related to an alleged deal to sell office space to a Russian businessman.
However, in 2011, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Korniychuk's detention was illegal, and he was released. The charges against him were eventually dropped in 2014.
Later Life
Since the resolution of his legal troubles, Korniychuk has continued to be active in Ukrainian politics and law. He remains a member of the USDP and has spoken out on various political and legal issues.
