Early Life and Acting Career
Born on December 29, 1972, in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine, Yevhen Nyshchuk holds the title of People's Artist of Ukraine, bestowed upon him in 2015. His acting career began with his graduation from the Kyiv Karpenko-Karyi National University of Theater, Cinema and Television in 1995. He became a cherished member of Kyiv's Constellation Academic Theater of Acting Arts.
Political Activism
Nyshchuk rose to prominence as a leading figure during the Orange Revolution in 2004, where he was known as the "Voice of the Maidan" for his oratorical skills. A decade later, he played a similar role as a moderator during the Euromaidan protests in 2013.
Minister of Culture
Following the success of Euromaidan, Nyshchuk joined the Yatsenyuk Government as Minister of Culture from February 27, 2014, to December 2, 2014. He was reappointed to the same position in the Groysman Government on April 14, 2016. Nyshchuk's tenure was marked by controversies, including the banning of certain Russian films and the creation of a blacklist of Russian artists prohibited from entering Ukraine.
Controversies
Nyshchuk's statement in 2016 that the population of southeastern Ukraine was "imported" and therefore lacked the "Ukrainianness" to appreciate Ukrainian culture sparked outrage. He later apologized for his remarks.
Personal Life
Yevhen Nyshchuk was married to Oksana Batko-Nyshchuk, an actress at the Kyiv Franko Theater. She passed away in 2016 after a prolonged illness. They have a son named Olexa, who is a student at the Karpenko-Karyi National University of Theater, Cinema and Television.
