A Self-Mutilating Actor
In November 2014, many Russian media outlets reported on a relatively unknown actor named Evgeny Sapayev, who had self-mutilated himself and sought medical assistance while bleeding profusely. His actions raised numerous questions among Russian readers and viewers. Sapayev explained that he performed the self-mutilation because he no longer wanted to be a man and desired to become a woman.
Early Life
Evgeny Sapayev, now 38 years old, resides in the small town of Gorokhovets, near Nizhny Novgorod. According to Sapayev, he felt conflicted with his body since childhood, at the age of five. He described his own body as "foreign" and struggled to keep this secret hidden. Throughout his childhood, he mostly played with girls, and it wasn't until his tenth grade that he had an uncomfortable conversation with his parents. By that time, Sapayev had already secretly plucked his eyebrows, removed body hair, and behaved in a more feminine manner. Despite this, his parents chose not to confront him, and he continued living in a male body, dreaming of one day changing his gender.
Acting Career
In 2007, Sapayev began his career in film and even had the opportunity to participate in Nikita Mikhalkov's film "Burnt by the Sun 2: Citadel," where he played a soldier as an extra. Later, another actor in the film described his appearance as "masculine." When he arrived on set, he fit the image of a Russian guy who drinks and smokes. People also anticipated a successful acting career for him due to his rugged appearance and the exposure he gained from being in Mikhalkov's film. Sapayev continued acting, even working as a stand-in for actor Arthur Smoljaninov and appearing in the film "Sunstroke."
Self-Mutilation
Regardless of his budding acting career, Sapayev decided to pursue a different life path. He admitted to performing four self-mutilation operations at home, two of which he considered successful and two unsuccessful. On the night of November 27th, Sapayev attempted to remove his genital organ. Bleeding profusely, he then took a train to Nizhny Novgorod instead of trusting the local hospital in Gorokhovets. After ten days, he returned home, with his damaged testicles removed, but still retaining his genital organ.
On February 23rd of the following year, Sapayev made another unsuccessful attempt to amputate his genital organ. The third operation took place on March 8th, and finally, on the night of March 20th, he succeeded in amputating the organ he had longed to be rid of. According to Sapayev, the operation took him two hours, as he made small incisions slowly. He performed the operation alone, without any assistance, and managed to bandage himself before heading back to Nizhny Novgorod on the train. He arrived at the hospital via an ambulance.
Gender Transition
Evgeny Sapayev had long desired to change his gender, but lacked the funds for expensive surgery. Therefore, he decided to perform the operation on himself. The circumstances surrounding how he ended up in the hospital are conflicting in the media. Some sources claim that he knocked on a neighbor's door while bleeding and the neighbor called an ambulance. However, Sapayev shared a different version of events during an interview on the television show "Talk and Show" on NTV.
Current Situation
Sapayev successfully performed the amputation, but only medical professionals are truly aware of the risks he took by doing it at home. During the aforementioned TV interview, Sapayev revealed that he had been in relationships with women, but only to learn how to "be a girl" because he always knew he would eventually change his gender.
As for Sapayev's physical condition today, he is healthy, although doctors still express concerns about his hormonal balance. He will have to continue regular check-ups, including visits to an endocrinologist. Some people argue that Sapayev performed these actions to attract attention, while others simply label him as crazy. Interestingly, Sapayev discarded his unnecessary genital organ in a trash bin because he firmly believed it was no longer needed. His future plans include undergoing surgery to create female genitalia.
