Biography of Yevhen Stankovych
Yevhen Stankovych is a Ukrainian composer, born on February 6, 1942, in Svalyava, Zakarpattia Oblast, Ukraine. He is known for his contributions to Ukrainian classical music and is considered one of the most prominent composers of his generation.
Education and Early Career
Stankovych began his musical education at the Uzhhorod Music School. He later attended the Lviv State Conservatory named after M. Lysenko, studying composition under the guidance of Adam Soltys. He continued his studies at the Kyiv State Conservatory named after P. Tchaikovsky, where he studied composition with Boris Lyatoshynsky and Miroslav Skoryk.
During his early career, Stankovych worked as an editor at the publishing house "Musical Ukraine" from 1970 to 1976. He also served as the Deputy Chairman of the Kyiv branch of the Union of Composers of Ukraine from 1976.
Professional Achievements
In 1988, Stankovych became a professor and the head of the composition department at the National Music Academy of Ukraine named after P. Tchaikovsky. He held this position until his retirement in 2019. Stankovych has composed a wide range of musical works, including symphonies, chamber symphonies, operas, ballets, oratorios, vocal and instrumental compositions, as well as music for theater performances and films.
Stankovych's compositions have been performed in concert halls around the world, including Canada, the United States, Germany, France, Spain, China, the Philippines, and Eastern European countries. He served as the jury chairman for the First International Festival of Contemporary Music in Canada in 1992 and was the composer-in-residence for the Canton of Bern, Switzerland, in 1996.
Awards and Honors
Throughout his career, Stankovych has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to music. He was awarded the title of People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR in 1986 and was appointed the Chairman of the Board of the Union of Composers of Ukraine from 1990 to 1993. Stankovych was also honored with the Hero of Ukraine award in 2008, in recognition of his significant personal contribution to enriching the world's musical heritage and his longstanding creative activities in the field of enhancing national culture.
In addition to these prestigious awards, Stankovych has also been recognized with the Order of Friendship of Peoples in 1982, the Medal for Labor Valor in 1976, and the Honorary Diploma from the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine in 2002. He is a recipient of the Merited Artist of the Ukrainian SSR title in 1980 and the Laureate of the Republican Prize of the Lysenko Kiev Society of Music Lovers in 1976. He was also honored with the National Taras Shevchenko Prize of Ukraine in 1977.
Yevhen Stankovych's compositions have been recorded by various companies, including "Melodiya," "Analekta," "ESV," and "Naxos." His music continues to captivate audiences and contribute to the rich tapestry of Ukrainian classical music.
