Russian Cellist, Father of Sergei Volf

Early Life and Education

Volf was born in Russia and graduated from the Saint Petersburg Conservatory in 1892 under the tutelage of Alexander Verzhbilovich. His father was the acclaimed poet Sergei Volf.

Orchestral Career

Volf spent an impressive 57 years as a cellist in the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, from 1894 to 1951. As an ensemble performer, he collaborated with renowned musicians such as Alexander Ziloti.

Teaching Legacy

From 1921, Volf became a dedicated educator at the Leningrad Conservatory. He taught the cello class until 1950 before transitioning to the quartet class. His tenure as a professor began in 1926. Notable students under his guidance include Grigory Pekker and Boris Struve.

Recognition and Accomplishments

In recognition of his talent and impact, Volf was awarded the prestigious title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR in 1935.
