Biography of Evgeny Yuriev

Evgeny Borisovich Yuriev is a Ukrainian scientist, psychiatrist, and suicidologist. He was born on July 7, 1950, in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine. In 1973, he graduated from Dnepropetrovsk Medical Institute and then pursued his postgraduate studies at the Kharkov Research Institute of Neurology and Psychiatry named after V.P. Protopopov. In 1985, he defended his candidate dissertation in the field of psychiatry.

Professional Career

Since 1975, Yuriev has been working at the Dnepropetrovsk Regional Clinical Psychiatric Hospital. From 1982 until the present, he has been the head of the regional crisis department. His professional interests include the treatment of depression, social psychiatry, management issues in psychiatric care systems, and philosophical aspects of psychiatry.

Contributions to Suicide Prevention

In the years 1982-1983, the first suicide prevention service in Ukraine was established in the Dnepropetrovsk region. It included helplines, a social and psychological support office, and a crisis department. During this period, the first scientific-methodological conference on suicide prevention was held in Dnepropetrovsk by the All-Union Research Suicidological Center. Evgeny Borisovich Yuriev became the first suicidologist specialist in the Dnepropetrovsk Regional Health Department and held this position until 1999. As a result of his work, there was a significant decrease in suicide attempts and suicides in the region.

Research and Publications

Evgeny Borisovich is the author of scientific articles on psychiatric problems and the author of two books: "If It's Depression..." and "Ukraine: A Psychiatrist's Perspective." He has participated in numerous international and domestic conferences and congresses, including those held in Barcelona, Prague, San Francisco, Madrid, Sofia, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Teplice, Atlanta, Washington, Vilnius, Zurich, Montreux, and Florence. He has also contributed to various research projects in the field of psychiatry, such as the Attitudes and Needs Assessment in Psychiatry Project (ANAP).

Other Contributions

Yuriev was one of the founders of the Ukrainian Institute of Mental Health and the Association for Medical-Psychological Support and Rehabilitation of the Population in Crisis Conditions. He also served as a specialist-expert for the Ukrainian group working on mental health policy development from 2001 to 2002.
