Biography of Evita Del Mundo
Evita Del Mundo, a young Malaysian woman covered from head to toe in large hairy dark brown moles, has expressed her desire to compete for the Miss Universe crown. Born with these moles covering her face and body, as well as birthmarks on her neck and shoulders, 20-year-old Evita has faced ridicule and was even nicknamed 'cookie with chocolate crumbs'. However, she decided to challenge her tormentors and audition for the Miss Universe Malaysia beauty pageant. In her early school years, Evita was bullied by her classmates, who called her a "monster" and a "cookie with chocolate crumbs" because of her unique features. Despite this, she gradually gained confidence when other students began to understand and accept her. Her mother, who worked as a teacher at her school, also provided invaluable support. Instead of undergoing risky surgery to remove her unsightly moles, Evita made the bold decision to participate in a beauty pageant. She faced many challenges, as she recalls, "I was teased in primary school and other kids gave me nicknames like 'monster' or 'chipsmore'." She further adds, "In primary school, no one wanted to be friends with me. I remember my teacher asking two girls to accompany me during recess, and they whispered to each other, saying, 'Why do we have to take care of her like a princess?' It broke my heart. I told them not to follow me, and they disappeared at that moment. In essence, I was lonely." Evita, the second of five children, was born to a Filipino mother and a Malaysian father and grew up on Borneo Island. As she grew older, she became more aware of her condition and often dreamed of having her moles removed. However, doctors warned that the procedure could jeopardize her health, so at the age of 16, Evita decided to fully embrace the body she was given. She began taking singing lessons and learned to play the guitar, which helped her become more calm, confident, and less self-critical. Some speculated that Evita may suffer from a rare skin condition, but specialists confirmed that her birthmarks were quite ordinary. Currently, Evita works part-time at a local cafe. She hopes that her story and her approach to life will inspire others to embrace their bodies. On June 17, 2017, Evita auditioned for the Miss Universe Malaysia beauty pageant and met last year's winner, Samantha Katie James. She hopes to advance to the next round of selections, but even if she doesn't, her sense of self-worth will remain unshaken, and she will continue to participate in other beauty pageants. "I have learned to live with my moles and love myself," says Evita. "I gradually gained confidence to be able to showcase my uniqueness." She adds, "The judges asked me a few questions, such as how I would promote Malaysian interests if I won the title of Miss Universe Malaysia. I simply crossed my fingers for luck. If I don't make it, there are always other competitions." Giant congenital melanocytic nevus, which are benign birthmarks present at birth, can have shades ranging from light brown to black and can cover the entire body. It is estimated that one in 50,000 newborns have a melanocytic nevus. Initially, doctors suspected that Evita Del Mundo may be one of the victims of this condition, but specialized tests did not confirm their speculation. Experts say that melanocytic nevus is caused by faulty genes, and the development of the disease depends on the specific mutation that makes certain enzymes overly active.
