Early Life and Career
Born to a prominent Icelandic footballer, Arnor Gudjohnsen, Eidur Gudjohnsen embarked on his footballing journey at the age of 15. After joining PSV Eindhoven in 1994, he made his debut for the club at the tender age of 17, even featuring in a Champions League match against Barcelona.
International Debut and Family History
In April 1996, Eidur made history alongside his father, Arnor. They became the first father-son duo to play in the same international match for Iceland. Arnor started the game, while Eidur replaced his father in the second half, etching their names into footballing lore.
Injury and Move to England
A devastating ankle injury in late 1996 saw PSV terminate Eidur's contract. After a recovery period, he joined Bolton Wanderers in 1998 and quickly established himself as a prolific scorer. He helped Bolton reach the semi-finals of both the FA Cup and League Cup, and his impressive form earned him a move to Chelsea in 2000.
Success at Chelsea
At Chelsea, Eidur formed a formidable partnership with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. He scored 23 goals in his first season, assisting Hasselbaink's 27-goal campaign. His exceptional ball control, dribbling skills, and powerful strikes showcased his attacking prowess. Under Jose Mourinho, Eidur expanded his role, playing as a deep-lying forward and creating chances for his teammates. Mourinho famously referred to him as the "blonde Maradona."
Departure from Chelsea and Move to Barcelona
With Chelsea's acquisition of star players after Roman Abramovich's takeover, Eidur's place in the team was uncertain. However, he remained a regular in the 2003/04 and 2004/05 seasons. But in the 2005/06 season, he saw reduced playing time and eventually signed with Barcelona in 2006.
Barcelona Career
Brought in as a replacement for Henrik Larsson, Eidur made an immediate impact at Barcelona. He scored the winning goal on his La Liga debut against Celta Vigo and netted against his former club Chelsea in the Champions League. When Samuel Eto'o sustained an injury, Eidur stepped up as the team's main striker, leading Barcelona to numerous victories.
