Fadili Vokri: A Trailblazing Yugoslav Striker
Fadili Vokri, an Albanian-born former Yugoslav footballer, left an indelible mark on the sport. Born and raised in Podujevo, he began his footballing journey with the local club "Lap".
Rise to Prominence
In 1980, Vokri made his debut in senior football with Pristina, the strongest club in Kosovo. He quickly established himself as one of the team's top players, captaining the side during their "golden generation" of the 1980s. Pristina regularly competed in the Yugoslav First League, and Vokri was a key contributor to their success.
National Team and International Career
In 1984, Vokri debuted for the Yugoslav national team in a friendly match against Scotland. Despite the team's 6-1 loss, Vokri netted Yugoslavia's only goal. He went on to represent his country 12 times, scoring six goals. Notably, Vokri became the first and only Albanian to play for the Yugoslav national team.
Success in Belgrade and Beyond
In 1986, Vokri transferred to Partizan Belgrade, where he won both the Yugoslav Championship and the Yugoslav Cup. He then ventured abroad, joining Nîmes Olympique in France. However, the club failed to gain promotion to Ligue 1, and Vokri moved to Fenerbahçe in Turkey, where he spent two seasons. He concluded his career in France, where he also served as sporting director at Montluçon.
Post-Playing Career
After retiring as a player, Vokri remained involved in football. He held various positions at different clubs before being elected president of the Football Federation of Kosovo on February 16, 2008.
