Sergio Cofferati, an Italian labor leader and politician, was born in 1944 in the Piedmont region of Italy. He began his political journey in the 1960s with the Italian Socialist Party. From 1964 to 1972, he was a member of the Italian Socialist Party of Proletarian Unity, and from 1972 to 1993, he aligned with the Italian Communist Party (later renamed the Democratic Party of the Left after 1991). In 1993, he joined the Communist Refoundation Party.

Labor Union Activism

In the 1970s and 1980s, Cofferati played a prominent role in the Italian labor movement. As the regional secretary of the Italian General Confederation of Labor in Piedmont from 1975 to 1985, he led several significant strikes, including the memorable 35-day occupation of the Fiat factory by workers.

Parliamentary and Leadership Roles

Cofferati's political career reached new heights in 1994 when he was elected to the European Parliament, a position he held for three consecutive terms until 2006. In 1994, he became the leader of the Communist Refoundation Party, leading the party until 2006.
