Toorekull Aitmatov: Kyrgyz Statesman and Martyr
Early Life and CareerToorekull Aitmatov was a prominent Kyrgyz party and state official. He served as the 2nd Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kyrgyzstan and the People's Commissar of Trade of the Kyrgyz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. In the 1930s, he resided and worked in Osh, leading the Aravan-Burin district.
Political Purge
On September 15, 1937, the Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kyrgyzstan resolved to request the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks) to recall Aitmatov from his studies at the Institute of Red Professors and place him at the disposal of the Kyrgyz Communist Party to resolve issues related to his party membership. He was subsequently arrested in Moscow and transported to Bishkek, where he was executed in 1938.
Family Legacy
Toorekull Aitmatov was the father of acclaimed writer Chingiz Aitmatov, mining scientist Ilgiz Aitmatov, physicist and rector of the Kyrgyz Women's Movement Rosa Aitmatova.
Chingiz Aitmatov's Quest
Chingiz Aitmatov spent years searching for his father's grave, finally locating it in the 1990s. He requested that he be buried next to his father, fulfilling his wish to honor his father's legacy.
