Biography of Fausto Sarli

Fausto Sarli, an Italian fashion designer, was born in Naples, Italy, in 1927. Initially, he pursued a career in business, but later switched to fashion design. In 1952, Sarli began his career in collaboration with Emilio Schuberth and de Luca. He gained recognition for his designs and won the 'STAMI' award in 1954. In 1957, he emerged as the winner in a competition for young designers, judged by renowned Italian artist and designer Roberto Capucci, Veneziani, Simonetta Ravizza, and Schubert.

Early Career and Success

In 1957, Fausto Sarli presented his first collection under his own name at Palazzo Pitti in Florence. The following year, he established his own atelier in Naples, which became highly successful. Within a year, Sarli opened his second salon in Rome, on Via Vittorio Veneto. After conquering Italy, he expanded his presence internationally, showcasing his collections in Canada in the 1960s, the United States in 1965, and Japan in 1970.

Studio Collection and Ready-to-Wear Line

In the 1980s, Fausto Sarli began working on his 'Studio' collection and launched his ready-to-wear line in 1984. From 1974 to 1976, Sergio Altieri collaborated with Sarli before joining Pierre Cardin in France. In 1992, Sarli ventured into the accessories market, launching his own line.

Celebrating Italian Fashion and Legacy

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Italian fashion in 2001, Fausto Sarli, along with other prominent Italian designers, presented their creations at a stunning exhibition. In 2002, to mark his 50 years in the fashion industry, Sarli organized two memorable fashion shows simultaneously in Naples and Rome. His final collection, for the autumn/winter 2004 season, was showcased in Rome.

Legacy and Recognition

Fausto Sarli passed away on December 9, 2010, in Rome. Giorgio Napolitano, the 11th President of the Italian Republic, expressed his condolences, praising Sarli's originality and balanced style. Sarli's esteemed clientele included Karla Fracci, Carla Bruni, Elizabeth Taylor, Monica Bellucci, and many others. His contributions to the world of fashion and his unique designs have left an indelible mark on the industry.
