Biography of Melinda Looi
Early Life and EducationMelinda Looi was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, into a family where her mother was a renowned tailor. Initially, Looi had aspirations of becoming an artist but her parents opposed this risky career choice. Eventually, she decided to follow in her mother's footsteps and pursued fashion. Looi attended the La Salle Institute of Design in Kuala Lumpur, where she won the title of "Malaysian Young Designer of the Year" in 1995. This victory granted her a scholarship to study at the La Salle School of Fashion in Montreal, Canada.
Career and Achievements
After returning to Malaysia in 1998, Looi worked with her parents for a year before venturing out to start her own fashion label. Over the span of ten years, she created a unique collection of artful and distinctive ready-to-wear designs. Her couture line helped Looi gain clients from around the world, including the United States, Middle East, South Africa, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and her native Malaysia. Her creations have been worn by celebrities such as Cameron Diaz, Britney Spears, and Mena Suvari. Looi's passion for culture, performing arts, and costume history is reflected in her designs, particularly her signature "avant-garde" gothic traditions and eclectic style that combines vintage and designer clothing.
Brand Expansion and International Recognition
In 2000, Looi established Mellooi Creation Sdn. Bhd. to expand and strengthen her brand. This company is responsible for the development of Melinda Looi Couture, Melinda Looi Prêt-a-Porter, and MELL on both local and international markets. Looi draws inspiration from Malaysia's multicultural society, which consists of Malays, Chinese, Indians, and other indigenous and minority groups. She has recently participated in the Islamic Fashion Festival in Jakarta, Indonesia, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, tapping into the growing market in this industry.

Melinda Looi Couture is known for its high-quality materials, such as French lace and natural silk chiffon, showcasing exclusive creations. The brand is also renowned for its exquisite wedding dresses made from luxurious fabrics with lavish details. The Melinda Looi Couture showroom is located in Bangsar, a suburban area of Kuala Lumpur, where Looi personally welcomes local and international clients. Melinda Looi Prêt-a-Porter offers a collection of ready-to-wear evening and cocktail dresses that have gained popularity among socialites, celebrities, businesswomen, modern housewives, and individuals seeking fashionable and stylish clothing for the younger generation. Since 2009, the brand has also expanded to offer ready-made wedding dresses.
Personal Life
In 2003, Melinda Looi married Dirk Luebbert, a native of Germany who serves as the Managing Director of Mellooi Creation. The couple is currently expecting their third child.
Looi's ultimate goal is to establish a museum in Malaysia dedicated to the country's fashion industry and the history of fashion.
