Early Life and Education
Born on December 30, 1986, in Middlesbrough, England, Faye Marsay grew up in Loftus with her brother. Her father worked as a steelworker and firefighter, while her mother was a health service secretary. From a young age, Faye loved playing football with the neighborhood boys and joined a girls' team at age 11, until a knee injury forced her to stop.
Another passion for Marsay was acting. She first saw a pantomime at age six and became an avid fan of Christmas plays. However, her school and college didn't offer drama classes, and university was financially out of reach for her family. Fortunately, she won a scholarship to the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, although she didn't get in the first time she applied.
Acting Career
Marsay began her professional acting career in 2008. She made her theater debut in "Hansel and Gretel" and "Peter Pan." While at Bristol Old Vic, she appeared in plays such as "The Cherry Orchard," "Hard Times," "All's Well That Ends Well," and "Macbeth." In 2012, she received the Spotlight casting agent's award while still a student.
After graduating, Marsay focused on film, occasionally returning to the theater. She made her film debut in the 2008 comedy "Is That It?" and disappeared from the screen for five years. In the summer of 2013, she appeared in a supporting role in the series "The White Queen," portraying Anne Neville, the wife of Richard III (Aneurin Barnard).
Marsay played a Christmas episode of "Doctor Who," replacing departing Jenna Coleman. She also had a minor role in the drama "Pride," based on a little-known episode in Margaret Thatcher's life. Notably, Marsay's family did not support the Prime Minister's policies.
In 2015, Marsay's resume expanded with "Game of Thrones," joining the cast in seasons five and six. She auditioned without much hope of getting into such a grand show but attended the casting for the experience. However, she landed the role of the Waif, a priestess in the House of Black and White in Braavos, to whom Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) gave the nickname Waif.
Marsay had been a fan of Arya's storyline and Williams, but she disliked the Waif. Thus, she played the character as a "spiteful, jealous, blinkered sadist." Marsay was so convincing in the role that her social media accounts received death threats.
During filming, Marsay was so dedicated that her colleagues dubbed her "The Terminator." Once, exhausted, she fell asleep face down in her dinner. She trained extensively, and during a fight scene rehearsal, she accidentally kicked Williams hard in the stomach. Williams, in turn, almost sliced off Marsay's ear with a prop sword. Despite the occasional mishaps, the actresses developed a close relationship on set, and Marsay admitted to being in awe of Williams' talent, despite being 11 years her senior.
In 2016, Marsay appeared in season three of the anthology series "Black Mirror." She portrayed a detective investigating a string of deaths involving victims of online bullying by robotic insects.
That same year, Marsay made her lead role debut in the miniseries "Love, Nina." The plot was based on the life and memoirs of Nina Stibbe, who worked as a nanny for journalist and editor Mary-Kay Wilmers in her youth. In the show, Helena Bonham Carter played Wilmers as "Georgia." Marsay was thrilled to work with Bonham Carter, calling it a "dream come true."
Later, Marsay played a supporting role in the miniseries "McMafia," which featured Russian stars Maria Shukshina, Elena Lyadova, and Danila Kozlovsky. In 2022, she starred in the feature-length melodrama "Lady Chatterley's Lover" and the "Star Wars" series "Andor." Marsay dreams of playing a character similar to serial killer Aileen Wuornos, portrayed by Charlize Theron in the biopic "Monster."
Personal Life
Marsay keeps her personal life private, having learned to guard herself after the backlash she received for her role as the Waif. She loves dogs and plans to have children someday, whom she will raise in London or her hometown of Middlesbrough. Marsay feels compelled to engage in social issues. She has participated in protests against the Yorkshire pit closures and traveled to Greece to aid refugees.
Present Day
In spring 2023, Marsay took on another lead role in the dramatic miniseries "Ten Pound Poms." The show follows the experiences of British emigrants who traveled to New Zealand or Australia in the mid-1950s in search of a better life, only to find that it wasn't always as rosy as promised.
