Kiselev, the Muscovite Envoy and Voivode

Early Life and Career

Under the reign of Ivan III and his son Vasiliy III, Kiselev served as a voivode (military governor) and a grand ducal representative. He was stationed in Kazan, where he collected taxes and enjoyed considerable authority.

Controversies in Kazan

However, Kiselev's excessive use of power drew the ire of the Kazan khan, Muhammad Amin. The khan complained to the grand duke that Kiselev was demanding extras, such as copper, horses, and furs, in addition to regular duties.

Diplomatic Mission

In 1502, Grand Duke Vasiliy III dispatched Kiselev to the Crimean khan, Mengli I Giray, to negotiate a truce with Lithuania.

Battle of Kazan and Retreat to Murom

In 1506, after a devastating defeat inflicted by Muhammad Amin on the Russian forces near Kazan, Kiselev led a detachment of Moscow cavalry alongside Tatar prince Janaaley. As they retreated towards Murom, they were pursued by Kazan forces. However, Kiselev's detachment successfully repelled the attack and reached Murom safely.
