Fedor Tikhonovich Medyanik
Early Life and CareerFedor Tikhonovich Medyanik was born on December 23, 1869, in the village of Bekeshevskaya. Born into a poor family, he began earning his own living from an early age, forced to abandon his education and become a shepherd.
Military Service
At the age of 19, he joined the Cossack training in his village. Enlisted in 1888, he was assigned to the active service squad in 1891. In 1892, he was deployed to the 2nd Kuban Plastun Battalion, where he completed training in 1893. He rose through the ranks, becoming a sergeant in 1895 and a battalion sergeant major in 1898.
Sino-Japanese War
Seeking financial stability, he joined the Chinese Eastern Railway Security Service in 1897. For his gallantry during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, he was awarded the 4th and 3rd class Orders of Saint George. For his bravery, he also received a silver medal.
Russo-Japanese War
In 1903, Medyanik was assigned to the Personal Imperial Convoy. He volunteered for extended service and was decorated with a silver chevron. In 1904, he was deployed to the Russo-Japanese War, joining the Ussuri Cossack Regiment. He earned two Orders of Military Distinction and was promoted to warrant officer.
Return and Assassination
After the war, Medyanik rejoined the Imperial Convoy and later requested his discharge to return to the Kuban Cossack Host. In 1907, he was elected as the Ataman (leader) of the Bekeshevskaya village. Tragically, he was assassinated in his home on November 13, 1907, by unknown attackers.
