Early Life and Education

Carlo Calvi was born into an aristocratic family in Milan, Italy. He studied law at the University of Pavia and pursued a career in public service. From 1870, he directed the Monte di Pietà, a public lending institution in Milan.

Debut as a Writer

Calvi's literary debut was a historical novel entitled "A Castle in the Roman Campagna" (1852). He followed this with a trilogy of contemporary novels: "A Queen of Fashion" (1857), "Leonilda" (1860), and "Claudia" (1862).

Historical Scholarship

Calvi's first work of historical scholarship examined the history of the charitable pawnshops known as Monti di Pietà (1871). He later published "The Milanese Patriciate" (1874, second volume 1876) and various other studies. His most significant work was "The Visconti-Sforza Castle in the History of Milan" (1894), which traced the history of Milan through the five centuries of the Sforza Castle. Calvi also contributed to the collective work "Notable Families of Milan" (1875-1887).

Later Years

From 1895, Calvi served as President of the Lombard Historical Society. He continued his historical research and writing until his passing.
