French Biblical Scholar, Archaeologist, and Geographer

French Dominican Frère Félix-Marie Abel was a renowned biblical scholar, archaeologist, and geographer who specialized in the region of Palestine.

Early Life and Education

Born in Verdun, France, Abel entered the Dominican monastery of Saint-Maximin in 1897. He pursued his studies at the Dominican Biblical School in Jerusalem, where he became a professor in 1905.

Research and Excavations

Throughout his career, Abel conducted extensive research expeditions and archaeological excavations in Palestine. His meticulous examinations shed light on the historical and geographical landscapes of the region.

Geographic Masterpiece

Abel's magnum opus, "Géographie de la Palestine," is a comprehensive study of Palestinian geography. The first volume, published in 1933, covers physical and historical geography. The second volume, released in the same year, examines political geography and the locations of major cities.

Archaeological Reports

In collaboration with L. Vincent, Abel published detailed archaeological reports on biblical cities. These included "Jérusalem nouvelle" (1914-1926), "Bethléem: le Sanctuaire de la Nativité" (1914), "Hébron" (1923), and "Emmaüs" (1932).

Linguistic Expertise

Abel was also an accomplished linguist. He authored a grammar of biblical Greek, known as "Grammaire du grec biblique" (1927), which remains a valuable resource for scholars studying the Septuagint and the New Testament.

Recognition and Legacy

Abel's contributions to biblical and archaeological scholarship earned him international recognition. In 1940, he was appointed a consultant to the Pontifical Biblical Commission. His works continue to be widely studied and cited to this day, making him a towering figure in the field of biblical geography.
