A Life Dedicated to Archaeology
Early Life and EducationBorn in Poland, the renowned archaeologist and Egyptologist embarked on his academic journey at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. After graduating in 1957, he pursued doctoral studies at the Institute of Human Paleontology in Paris, earning his doctorate in 1961.
Academic Accomplishments
In 1967, he became a habilitated doctor, and in 1976, a professor at his alma mater, the Jagiellonian University. His academic career extended beyond Poland, as he also taught at universities in Liège, Brussels, Ghent, the Collège de France, and Harvard. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Bordeaux.
Archaeological Excavations
Throughout his illustrious career, he conducted extensive archaeological excavations at numerous prehistoric sites across the globe, including Poland, Egypt, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Slovakia, and Central America.
Research Interests
His research delved into pivotal topics such as the transition from the Middle to Upper Paleolithic, the emergence of Homo sapiens sapiens, cultural evolution in the Upper Paleolithic, the Neolithization of Central Europe, and the archaeology of Central America and the Near East.
International Recognition
As a testament to his contributions, he served as Chairman of the International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences (UNESCO), member of the Permanent Council of the International Union of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Sciences, and honorary member of the British Prehistoric Society. He was also a member of esteemed archaeological societies in Germany, Italy, and the United States.
Editorial Contributions
Beyond his archaeological pursuits, he lent his expertise as a member of the editorial boards of prestigious journals such as "Geoarchaeology," "L'Anthropologie," "Praehistoria," "Archaeology and Ethnology of Eurasia," "Prehistoire Europeene," and "Mediterranean Archaeology and Archaeometry." He also co-edited "Eurasian Prehistory" alongside Ofer Bar-Yosef.
