Born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1834, Felix Dahn is renowned as a historical novelist and poet. His literary career began with the publication of his first novel, "Sigurd," in 1876.
Historical Epics
Dahn's historical novels focus primarily on the Germanic tribes during the Great Migration Period. His most notable works, "Attila" and "Fall of the Empire," chronicle the rise and fall of the Gothic kingdoms. "Attila" depicts the decline of the Attila the Hun's empire and his demise after marrying the daughter of King Visigast. "The Fall of the Empire" follows the collapse of the Ostrogoth Empire after the death of Theodoric the Great.
"Battle for Rome"
One of Dahn's most renowned works is his historical epic, "Battle for Rome." Originally written as a trilogy, it has been repeatedly adapted for film and television. The tale follows the struggles of the Germanic tribes to conquer ancient Rome. Xavier Scharwenka's opera, "Mataswintha," is based on the same historical events.
