Ferdinand Kittel was a Protestant missionary who dedicated his life to serving the people of India, particularly in the southern state of Karnataka. His work primarily focused on the Kannada language, making him a renowned scholar in the field.
Pioneer of Kannada Studies
Kittel's most significant contribution was the compilation of the first comprehensive Kannada-English dictionary. Prior to his efforts, there were several dictionaries created by Indian scholars from the 10th century onwards. However, these traditional dictionaries tended to omit dialectal variations. Recognizing this gap, Kittel embarked on an extensive journey throughout Karnataka, interacting with speakers from various regions and social strata. The result was a dictionary containing an impressive 70,000 words, including a wealth of dialectal vocabulary.
Grammar and Poetry
Beyond his dictionary, Kittel also authored a grammar of the Kannada language. His interest in the language extended to literary expression as well, as evidenced by his compositions of poetry in Kannada.
