Early Life and Education
Heydar Najaf oglu Huseynov was born on April 3, 1908, in Erivan (now Yerevan). He completed his undergraduate studies at the Azerbaijan State University in 1931. From 1931 to 1932, he pursued his postgraduate studies at the Azerbaijan State Scientific Research Institute.
Academic and Scientific Career
In 1936, Huseynov became the Director of the Institute of Encyclopedia and Dictionaries of the Azerbaijan Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. From 1939 to 1945, he served as the First Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the Azerbaijan Branch of the Academy of Sciences (AzFAN). From 1945 to 1950, he was the Vice-President of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR.
Simultaneously, Huseynov held prominent academic positions at the Azerbaijan State University. From 1943 to 1945, he was the Head of the Department of Marxism-Leninism and later the Head of the Department of Philosophy. He also served as the Chairman of the Department of Social Sciences at the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR.
Huseynov made significant contributions to historical and philosophical research. He played a leading role in establishing the Azerbaijan school of translation. He was involved in compiling and editing the Russian-Azerbaijani and Azerbaijani-Russian dictionaries. His scholarly works included studies on Bahmanyar, Nizami Ganjavi, Fizuli, A. Bakikhanov, Mirza Kazim bey, M. F. Akhundov, and H. Zardabi.
Political and Social Activism
Huseynov was not only an academic but also an active public figure. He served as the Director of the Institute of Party History under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan from 1945 to 1950.
Tragic End
In the late 1940s, Huseynov became a target of political persecution led by Mir Jafar Baghirov, the then-head of the Azerbaijan SSR. Unable to withstand the pressure, Huseynov committed suicide on August 15, 1950.
Awards and Recognition
Huseynov received numerous honors and awards for his academic achievements. These included:
- Order of the Red Banner of Labour (June 10, 1945)
- Stalin Prize, Second Degree (1948) for his contributions to the "Complete Russian-Azerbaijani Dictionary" (1940-1946)
- Stalin Prize, Third Degree (1950) for his book "From the History of Social and Philosophical Thought in Azerbaijan in the 19th Century"
