Early Life and Education
Fernão Lopes de Castanheda was born into a Portuguese military family, with his father serving as a magistrate in Goa. In 1528, Castanheda accompanied his father to Portuguese India and the Moluccas, where he spent the next decade gathering material for his future historical work.
Journey to the East
Castanheda's travels to the East provided him with firsthand experience of Portuguese expansion and conquest in Asia. He meticulously documented the geography, peoples, and events he encountered, laying the groundwork for his groundbreaking historical account.
Return to Portugal
In 1538, Castanheda returned to Portugal and assumed the position of university administrator at the University of Coimbra. It was here that he began publishing his magnum opus, the "History of the Discovery and Conquest of India by the Portuguese."
Publication of His Historical Work
The first volume of Castanheda's "History" was published in two editions in 1551 and 1554, followed by six more volumes during his lifetime. However, after the publication of eight volumes, Queen Catherine of Austria, under pressure from the Portuguese nobility, imposed a ban on the publication of the concluding ninth and tenth volumes due to Castanheda's perceived objectivity.
European Translations
Despite the censorship in Portugal, Castanheda's work gained widespread acclaim outside the country. It was translated into French, Spanish (1554), Italian (1578), and English (1582), becoming a valuable resource for European scholars and historians.
Legacy
Fernão Lopes de Castanheda's "History of the Discovery and Conquest of India by the Portuguese" remains an invaluable historical account of the Portuguese Empire in the East.
