Biography of Ferruccio Furlanetto

Ferruccio Furlanetto is an Italian opera singer, primarily known for his work as a bass in Italy and the United States. Born on May 16, 1949 in Sacile, Italy, Furlanetto initially studied classical philology and natural sciences. However, at the age of 22, he decided to dedicate himself to the study of opera music.

Career

Furlanetto made his debut in Trieste, Lonigo, and New Orleans, but he considers his professional debut to be in 1979 at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, where he performed the role of Macbeth in Giuseppe Verdi's opera, conducted by Claudio Abbado. Since then, he has built an extensive repertoire and has performed numerous roles, including Don Giovanni and Leporello in Mozart's "Don Giovanni," Philip II in Verdi's "Don Carlos," Figaro in Mozart's "Le nozze di Figaro," Gremin in Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin," Zaccaria in Verdi's "Nabucco," Méphistophélès in Gounod's "Faust," Orestes in Strauss' "Elektra," Jacopo Fiesco in Verdi's "Simon Boccanegra," and the title role in Mussorgsky's "Boris Godunov."

Furlanetto has performed on the stages of leading opera houses around the world. In the 1980-1981 season, he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and has also sung at the Paris Opera, Salzburg Festival, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Vienna Staatsoper, and Tel Aviv Opera. His performances in the United States are primarily associated with the Metropolitan Opera and the San Diego Opera. In San Diego, he has performed leading roles in operas such as "Oberto" (1985), "Mefistofele" (1988, 2001), "Don Giovanni" (1993, 2000), "Don Carlos" (2004), "Il barbiere di Siviglia" (2006), "Boris Godunov" (2007), and "Don Quichotte" (2009). He repeated his performance in "Don Quichotte" in Palermo in 2010 and made his debut as Baron Ochs in Richard Strauss' "Der Rosenkavalier" at the San Diego Opera in 2011. In 2013, he is scheduled to perform as Thomas Becket in Ildebrando Pizzetti's opera "Assassinio nella cattedrale" in San Diego.

Furlanetto is also popular as a concert performer. He has sung the "Coronation Mass" by Mozart in the presence of Pope John Paul II at the Vatican, conducted by Herbert von Karajan, which was broadcasted worldwide. He frequently gives concerts at La Scala, Berlin Deutsche Oper, Gran Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona, Vienna Musikverein, and many others.

Outside the Opera

Beyond the opera stage, Ferruccio Furlanetto has a passion for playing golf. He is also an honorary representative of the United Nations Organization.
