Early Life and Education

Born in February 1959 in Portuguese Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi's childhood was marked by Mozambique's national liberation war against Portuguese colonialism. His parents were freedom fighters, and he spent part of his childhood in neighboring Tanzania, where he attended school and joined the youth movement of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO).

Military and Engineering Career

In 1973, Nyusi began military training at the Nachingwea Center in Tanzania. After Mozambique's independence in 1975, he pursued an engineering degree in Maputo, followed by studies in Brno, Czechoslovakia, and Manchester, United Kingdom, where he earned a master's degree in 1999.

Professional Experience

From 1993 to 1995, Nyusi served as director of the railway company. He then became executive director of CFM-Norte from 1995 to 2007. He held various other positions, including professor of mathematics at the Faculty of Pedagogy and Business Research at the Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Maputo.

Political Career

Nyusi's political career began with his presidency of the Ferroviário de Nampula football club from 1995 to 2005. In 2008, he was appointed Minister of Defense, a position he held until he was nominated as FRELIMO's presidential candidate in 2014.

Presidency

In 2014, Nyusi was elected President of Mozambique. He took office on January 15, 2015, and was re-elected in 2019 with 73.46% of the vote. During his presidency, Nyusi has focused on economic development, infrastructure, and peace and stability.
