Early Life in UkraineFira Stukelman was born in Vinnitsa, Ukraine, to Abram Yakovlevich and Ida Iosifovna Hendelman. Her idyllic childhood came to an abrupt end with the outbreak of World War II. At the tender age of 8, she witnessed the execution of her parents by the Gestapo.
Survival and Hardship
Orphaned and alone, Fira was miraculously hidden under a bed by her mother, saving her life. She was taken in by a Ukrainian neighbor, who secretly transported her to her grandmother's village. Forced to hide in a basement for months, Fira finally emerged after her grandmother's death. However, her troubles were far from over. She begged for survival and eventually found refuge in the local ghetto.
Wartime Hardships
In the ghetto, Fira endured unimaginable horrors. Packed with mostly Moldovan Jews, the conditions were squalid, with rampant lice, infections, and starvation. In 1942, she was transported to another ghetto, where the suffering continued unabated.
Liberation and New Beginnings
The war's end in 1944 brought little comfort to Fira. She was sent to orphanages and a trade school, where she learned sewing. In 1956, she relocated to Dnipropetrovsk and subsequently married.
Overcoming Adversity
Fira faced further challenges when her immigration request to Israel was denied in 1979. It was only in 1988, during Gorbachev's presidency, that she was finally granted permission to leave. Her journey took her through Austria and Italy before she finally arrived in the United States in 1989.
Activism and Community Involvement
In her adopted country, Fira dedicated herself to community service. She joined the organization of former ghetto and concentration camp inmates, attended college, and became a respected leader in the local Jewish community. She actively engaged with international Jewish organizations, sharing her experiences and advocating for Holocaust remembrance.
