Felicity Ann Cornwall Benjamin, Baroness Benjamin

Felicity Ann Cornwall Benjamin is a British actress, broadcaster, writer, businesswoman, and philanthropist. She was the Chancellor of the University of Exeter from 2006 to 2016.

Early Life and Education

Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Benjamin emigrated to the United Kingdom in 1960. She attended Rosemide Preparatory School but left before completing her studies to work at a bank. While working, she continued her education at evening school.

Acting Career

Benjamin embarked on an acting career in West End musicals before becoming a children's television presenter in 1976. She hosted popular shows such as "Play School" and "Play Away." In addition to her television work, Benjamin has appeared in several episodic roles in television series.

Television Production and Publishing

In 1987, Benjamin founded her own television production company. She has published numerous books, including her autobiography "Coming to England" (1997).

Awards and Honors

For her contributions to television, Benjamin was awarded an OBE in 2001. She has also won several other awards, including the BAFTA Fellowship in 2019.

Chancellor of Exeter University

In 2006, Benjamin became Chancellor of the University of Exeter, where she received an Honorary Doctorate of Letters for her contributions to British literature. Under her leadership, the university's academic ranking rose significantly.

House of Lords and Other Roles

In 2008, Benjamin became Deputy Lieutenant of Greater London. In 2010, she became a life peer in the House of Lords, taking the title Baroness Benjamin. She is also Vice-President of the Royal Commonwealth Society.
