Early Life and Education
Florence Parly was born on May 8, 1963, in Boulogne-Billancourt, France. She graduated from the prestigious National School of Administration (ENA) in 1987.
Career in Government and Finance
After graduating from ENA, Parly joined the French Ministry of Finance as a civil administrator. She played a key role in establishing the minimum income program (RMI) and social security contributions (CSG). In 1995, she joined the Socialist Party and later became a budgetary advisor to Prime Minister Lionel Jospin. From 2000 to 2002, she served as State Secretary for Budget.
Return to Government
After a brief stint in politics, Parly joined Air France in 2005, rising to the position of Deputy CEO. In 2014, she moved to SNCF Voyageurs, becoming CEO in 2016. She also served as an independent director of Altran Technologies, Ingenico Group, and Zodiac Aerospace.
Minister of Armed Forces
On June 21, 2017, Parly was appointed Minister of Armed Forces in the second government of Édouard Philippe. She immediately resigned from her leadership positions in various companies to avoid conflicts of interest. In July 2019, she oversaw the creation of the French Space Command. She retained her position in the government of Jean Castex in 2020.
Patriot Act Controversy
In April 2021, Parly faced controversy after a group of retired generals and active-duty military officers published an open letter to President Emmanuel Macron expressing concerns about the state of France. Parly demanded that those involved be held accountable for political interference.
Later Career
Parly did not receive an appointment in the government of Élisabeth Borne, formed in May 2022.
