The GameMaster and Live-Action Role-Playing
In the 1980s, Ivey opened "The GameMaster" store in Arlington, Massachusetts, which offered role-playing games and figurines. Inspired by live-action role-playing (LARP) events like "Mid Realms Adventures," he developed the idea of giving players greater freedom of action.
Creation of Shandlin's Ferry and NERO
In 1987, Ivey organized "Shandlin's Ferry," a precursor to his groundbreaking game, "NERO International." NERO was a unique LARP that emphasized character development and player empowerment. Its popularity surged after a feature article in "Dragon" magazine.
Expansion and Growth of NERO
NERO rapidly expanded, with new campaigns established across the country. The first dedicated game site was acquired in Ware, Massachusetts, featuring 0.42 square kilometers of woodlands, meadows, and 27 structures. In 1998, Ivey sold the game to Joe Valenti.
