Biography of Werner von Siemens

Werner von Siemens was a German electrical engineer and the founder of the Siemens conglomerate. Born on December 13, 1816, in Lenthe, Kingdom of Hanover (present-day Germany), Siemens played a crucial role in the development and expansion of electric railways.

Early Life and Education

Siemens received his education at the Artillery and Engineering School in Berlin. In 1841, he obtained his first privilege for the electroplating of silver and gold, which led him to establish a factory in Berlin in partnership with Johann Georg Halske. He then invented a differential regulator for steam engines and water wheels, which is still used in some mechanisms.

Contributions to Telegraphy

In 1847, Siemens became a member of the commission responsible for introducing electric telegraphs in Prussia. This sparked a series of inventions related to telegraphy, including the development of a specialized machine for covering copper wire with gutta-percha. This machine became widely used in the production of insulated conductors for underground and underwater telegraph cables.

Advancements in Electric Railways

Siemens made significant contributions to the field of electric railways.
