Early Life and Priesthood

Francis Assisi Chullikatt was born on March 20, 1953, in Bolghatty, India. He commenced his ecclesiastical service in the Diocese of Verapoly, India, where he was ordained a priest on June 3, 1978. Chullikatt pursued advanced studies in Canon Law, obtaining a doctorate in the field.

Diplomatic Career at the Holy See

On July 15, 1988, Chullikatt joined the diplomatic service of the Holy See. He served in papal representations in Honduras, South Africa, the Philippines, and the United Nations in New York City (2000-2004). In New York, he held the position of Counsellor to the Holy See Mission to the United Nations. Chullikatt's diplomatic assignments also included the Secretariat of State of the Holy See in the Vatican.

Titular Archbishop and Apostolic Nuncio to Iraq and Jordan

On April 29, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Chullikatt as Apostolic Nuncio to Iraq and Jordan, as well as titular Archbishop of Ostrum. He succeeded Archbishop Fernando Filoni, who had been appointed Nuncio to the Philippines. Chullikatt's episcopal motto is "Fidei in Virtute" (Strength of Faith). He was consecrated a bishop on June 25, 2006, by Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo.

Permanent Observer to the United Nations

On July 17, 2010, Chullikatt was appointed Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations by Pope Benedict XVI. He became the first non-Italian to hold this position. He replaced Archbishop Celestino Migliore, who had been appointed Nuncio to Poland.

Apostolic Nuncio to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan

On April 30, 2016, Chullikatt was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan.

Apostolic Nuncio to Kyrgyzstan

On June 24, 2016, he was concurrently appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Kyrgyzstan.

Apostolic Nuncio to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro

On October 1, 2022, Chullikatt was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro.
