Francisco de Almeida: First Portuguese Viceroy of India
Francisco de Almeida, one of the key figures in the establishment of the Portuguese colonial empire, served as the first Viceroy of India.
Early Life and Military Career
Born to the first Count of Abrantes, Almeida spent most of his early life in military conflicts against the Moors. His bravery and leadership impressed King Manuel I, who appointed Almeida as Viceroy of India in March 1505 and entrusted him with an expedition to the East.
Indian Ocean Expansions
Leading a fleet of 21 ships, Almeida sailed to India, where he established Portuguese forts in strategically important locations such as Cannanore and Anjediva. He chose Kochi as his viceregal capital. Almeida's aggressive actions, including raids on Arab fortresses in Africa and a trade alliance with Malacca, consolidated Portuguese influence in the region.
Conflict with Albuquerque
However, Almeida's power was challenged by his ambitious rival, Afonso de Albuquerque. Almeida's attempt to arrest Albuquerque upon his arrival in India further escalated tensions. In November 1509, Almeida was forced to recognize Albuquerque's authority and return to Portugal.
Demise
On March 1, 1510, while seeking fresh water in Table Bay (now Cape Town), Almeida and his men were attacked by the Khoikhoi. In a skirmish with these indigenous warriors, the once-formidable Viceroy tragically lost his life.
Legacy
Francisco de Almeida's contributions to Portuguese colonialism are significant. His conquests and alliances laid the groundwork for the Portuguese Empire's expansion in the East. In recognition of his achievements, Airbus A340 aircraft of Tap Portugal airlines are named after him.
