Franciszek Smuda: A Polish Footballing Legend

Franciszek Smuda was a renowned Polish footballer and coach who made significant contributions to the sport both at home and abroad.

Early Life and Playing Career

Born on June 22, 1948, in Lubomia, Smuda began his footballing journey with Unia Racibórz. He later joined Odra Opole before making his Polish league debut for Stal Mielec in the 1970/71 season. Smuda also played for Piast Gliwice and had brief spells in the United States with Vistula Garfield and Hartford Bicentennials. In 1975, he returned to Poland to play for Legia Warsaw.

Coaching Success in Turkey and Poland

After ending his playing career in Germany, Smuda embarked on his coaching journey in the lower divisions of German football. In the late 1980s, he coached in Turkey, leading Altay and Konyaspor for a combined four seasons. In 1993, he returned to Poland to manage Stal Mielec, successfully guiding them away from relegation.

In May 1995, Smuda took over as manager of Widzew Łódź, where he finished second in the 1994/95 season, just behind Legia Warsaw. The following season, his team went undefeated, earning a spot in the qualification rounds of the 1996/97 Champions League. Smuda's Widzew overcame Danish champions to enter the group stage, facing formidable opponents such as Atlético Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, and Steaua Bucharest. Despite finishing third in the group, the team from Łódź repeated their league success and claimed another Ekstraklasa title.

Glory and Setbacks at Wisła Kraków

In 1997/98, Smuda was appointed manager of Wisła Kraków, where he aimed to build a team that could challenge not only domestically but also in European competitions. He achieved a league title the following season, but Wisła was banned from European competitions due to a fan incident. Smuda was eventually dismissed in September 1999 after a single-game defeat. He was re-hired in June 2001, but his second spell at Wisła ended with a failure to overcome Barcelona in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. After further defeats against Legia Warsaw and Polonia Warsaw, Smuda was replaced by Henryk Kasperczak in March 2002.

Coaching Legia Warsaw and Lech Poznań

After leaving Wisła, Smuda had a brief stint at Legia Warsaw in 1999 but failed to win any trophies or qualify for European competitions. In May 2006, he became manager of Lech Poznań, leading the club to a sixth-place finish in the 2006/07 season and a fourth-place finish the following year. During the 2008/09 season, Lech won the winter championship but a series of draws in the second half of the season resulted in a third-place finish. Smuda's contract with the club was not renewed.

Later Coaching Career and Health Struggles

Smuda later coached Piotrcovia Piotrków Trybunalski in Poland and Omonia Nicosia in Cyprus. He was also a candidate for the Gabon national team manager position in 2004. In 2009, he returned to Polish football to coach Zagłębie Lubin, where he helped the club avoid relegation. A year later, he led the team to a third-place finish, earning a place in the UEFA Cup. After several seasons away from Lech Poznań, Smuda returned to Zagłębie Lubin in August 2009.

Smuda's name was often mentioned as a candidate for the Poland national team manager position. He was close to being appointed after Antoni Piechniczek's departure in 1997, but the role ultimately went to Janusz Wójcik. In 1999, Smuda was again in the running after Wójcik's dismissal, but contractual obligations with Legia Warsaw prevented him from becoming the caretaker manager. The position was filled by Jerzy Engel.

On October 29, 2009, Smuda was finally chosen as the new head coach of the Polish national team. He led the team in the home tournament of Euro 2012, where Poland finished fourth in their group after drawing with Greece and Russia before losing to the Czech Republic. Smuda left his post as national team manager in August 2012 at the end of his contract.

Franciszek Smuda passed away on August 18, 2024, at the age of 76, from leukemia at the University Hospital in Kraków. He left behind a legacy as one of Poland's most respected footballers and coaches.
