Childhood and Early Career
Jürgen Norbert Klopp was born on June 16, 1967, in Stuttgart, West Germany. The son of a traveling salesman and a former goalkeeper, Klopp grew up in the rural town of Freudenstadt with his two older sisters. He began his football journey at local club Glatten, before moving to Ergenzingen and later Pforzheim.
Youth and University
As a teenager, Klopp represented three different Frankfurt-based teams: Eintracht Frankfurt, Viktoria Sindlingen, and Rot-Weiss Frankfurt. In 1988, while studying at the University of Frankfurt, Klopp became the coach of the Frankfurt D-Juniors youth team. His university thesis focused on gait analysis.
Mainz 05: Playing and Coaching
In the summer of 1990, Klopp signed for Mainz 05 in the German second division. He spent the majority of his professional playing career at Mainz, from 1990 to 2001, initially as a striker but transitioning to a defender in 1995. During his 15-year playing career with Mainz, Klopp scored 52 goals.
On February 27, 2001, Klopp was appointed as Mainz 05's manager, following the resignation of Eckhard Krautzun. He led his team to a 1-0 home victory over Duisburg in his debut match a day later.
Klopp remained manager for seven seasons, guiding Mainz to the top of the Bundesliga table and securing qualification for the UEFA Cup in the 2005-06 season. Despite Mainz's relegation to the second Bundesliga at the end of the 2006-07 campaign, Klopp opted to stay with the club. However, Mainz's failure to return to the top flight prompted Klopp to decline a contract extension. He resigned on June 30, 2008, with a managerial record of 109 wins, 78 draws, and 83 defeats.
Borussia Dortmund: Success on the Domestic and European Stage
In May 2008, Klopp was named as the new manager of Borussia Dortmund. He made his debut for the Bundesliga club in the German Cup on August 9, 2008, as Dortmund defeated Rot-Weiss Essen 3-1.
In his first season, Klopp led Dortmund to victory in the German Super Cup, defeating Bayern Munich. He helped the "BVB" finish sixth that season and improved their league position to fifth the following year, before guiding them to consecutive Bundesliga titles in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.
Despite losing the 2011 German Super Cup to Schalke 04, Dortmund's 2012-13 campaign was less impressive. Aiming to rectify the team's shortcomings, Klopp encouraged his players to focus on the UEFA Champions League. They reached the final of the prestigious tournament, losing 2-1 to Bayern Munich, with Arjen Robben scoring the winning goal in the 89th minute.
Klopp extended his contract with Dortmund until June 2018. He earned a €10,000 fine on March 17, 2014, for a "verbal attack" on referee Deniz Aytekin during a match against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Dortmund finished the 2013-14 season as runners-up in the Bundesliga, won the German Super Cup, and reached the quarterfinals of the Champions League, where they were defeated by Real Madrid.
Liverpool: A New Challenge
On October 8, 2015, Klopp agreed to a three-year contract to become manager of Liverpool, replacing the dismissed Brendan Rodgers. At his first press conference, Klopp famously described himself as "the Normal One," in parody of José Mourinho's "Special One" moniker when he was appointed Chelsea manager in 2004.
Klopp made his Liverpool debut on October 17, 2015, in a goalless draw against Tottenham Hotspur. The "Reds" secured their first win under Klopp on October 28, 2015, against Bournemouth, and reached the quarterfinals of the English Football League Cup. Three days later, they earned their first Premier League victory under Klopp, defeating Chelsea 3-1.
After three consecutive 1-1 draws to open their UEFA Europa League campaign, Liverpool defeated Rubin Kazan 1-0. Klopp missed a Premier League match in February 2016 due to an appendectomy. On February 28, Liverpool lost the 2016 Football League Cup final at Wembley Stadium, falling 3-1 to Manchester City in a penalty shootout.
On March 17, 2016, Klopp guided Liverpool into the Europa League quarterfinals with a 3-1 victory over Manchester United. Liverpool eliminated Klopp's former club, Borussia Dortmund, from the Europa League with a 4-3 aggregate victory, and advanced to the final. They faced Sevilla in the final, losing 3-1 despite Daniel Sturridge scoring an early goal.
On July 8, 2016, Klopp and his coaching staff signed a six-year contract extension with Liverpool, keeping them at the club until 2022.
On May 2, 2018, the "Reds" reached the final of the UEFA Champions League, defeating Italian club Roma 7-6 on aggregate. In the final, Liverpool were defeated 3-1 by Real Madrid.
Personal Life
Klopp is in his second marriage. He was previously married to Sabine, with whom he had a son, Marc, in 1988. Marc played football for several German clubs, including Frankfurt, Klein-Karben, Darmstadt 98, and Borussia Dortmund II.
On December 5, 2005, Klopp married social worker and children's author Ulla Sandrock. They met at a pub during the Oktoberfest in 2005. Ulla has a son, Dennis, from a previous relationship.
Klopp is a Protestant Christian and has openly discussed his faith. In interviews, he has often spoken about the importance of Jesus in his life. In an interview with The Guardian in April 2018, Klopp expressed his disagreement with the United Kingdom's decision to leave the European Union.
Klopp has appeared in the documentaries "Trainer!" (2013) and "Und vorne hilft der liebe Gott" (2016).
