Franciszek Zabłocki: Polish Poet and Dramatist

Franciszek Zabłocki was a distinguished Polish poet and one of the first Polish playwrights. His life and contributions to Polish literature are as follows:

Early Life and Education

Franciszek Zabłocki was born into the noble family of Zabłocki of the Łada coat of arms. He hailed from Volhynia. Initially, he studied at the Piarist college in Wielkie Meżyricze. For three years, he studied under the Jesuits.

Career in Education and Literature

In 1770–1774, Zabłocki served in the court of Anton Gorski, the cup-bearer of Ciechanów. In 1774, he became an official in the Education Commission, which oversaw education matters. He visited schools in various provinces.

From 1774 to 1777, Zabłocki contributed to the journal "Przyjemne i Pożyteczne Zabawy," penning articles and notes. From 1781 to 1788, he collaborated with the National Theatre, writing several plays. In 1783, he became secretary of the Elementary Book Society. He actively edited and printed schoolbooks. Zabłocki also translated scientific and Enlightenment works from French and German.

Political Involvement and Insurrection

In 1791, Zabłocki was appointed acting head of the Education Commission's office. In 1792, he joined the Targowica Confederation. However, in 1794, he participated in the Kościuszko Insurrection. He held various positions in the National Council's departments. He fought in the defense of Praga, a suburb of Warsaw.

Later Life and Return to the Priesthood

After the suppression of the insurrection in 1795, Zabłocki fled to Rome, where he became a priest. In 1798, he was granted permission to return to Poland. He served as a rural priest in the Puławy region. From 1800 until his death in 1821, he was a priest in Konstancinowo.
