Early Life and Education
Born in the noble family in the town of Shusha, Suleyman Sani Akhundov attended the Gorian Pedagogical Seminary in Georgia, graduating in 1894.
Pedagogy and Journalism
Akhuondov dedicated his life to teaching and journalism. He co-authored the "Second Year" Azerbaijani textbook in 1906. After Azerbaijan's Sovietization, he served briefly as Minister of Education for the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast.
Literary Career
In 1899, Akhundov wrote his debut comedy, "The Greedy," satirizing outdated customs and the unpleasant character of a miser. After the 1905 Russian Revolution, he explored broader socio-political issues from a democratic perspective. His 1905 short story, "The Feast," championed the interests of workers.
In 1912-1913, he published "Scary Tales," illuminating poverty and social inequality, becoming a beloved children's classic in Soviet Azerbaijan.
Post-Soviet Era
Following the 1920 Soviet establishment, Akhundov continued his literary critique of despotism and patriarchy. His notable works include the plays "Wheel of Fortune" and "Falcon's Nest" (1921) and the drama "Love and Revenge" (1922).
Honors and Legacy
In 1922, Akhundov became the first Chairman of the Azerbaijani Union of Writers and Poets. He received the title of Hero of Labor in 1932 for his literary and pedagogical contributions. A street in Baku is named after Suleyman Sani Akhundov, honoring his lasting legacy.
