Biography of Franco Alfano
Early Life and EducationFranco Alfano was an Italian composer, pianist, and music educator. He was born in 1875 in Posillipo, Naples. Until recently, music historians incorrectly stated his year of birth as 1876, which is not accurate. From a young age, Franco studied music and later became a student at the San Pietro a Majella Conservatory in Naples, where his mentors were Paolo Serrao and Camillo de Nardis. His education did not end there, as he furthered his studies in Leipzig, where he learned composition from Hans Sitt and Salomon Jadassohn.

Early Career
From 1896, Franco began touring the country as a pianist while already composing his own music. It was during his time in Leipzig that fate brought Franco together with his idol, Edvard Grieg, which had a profound impact on his music, leading to numerous orchestrations. His first opera, "Miranda," was never staged, and his second opera, "La Fonte Di Enschir," premiered in Breslau but did not gain significant success. Franco later presented his ballets "Napoli" and "Lorenza" in Paris. In 1904, his opera "Risurrezione," based on Leo Tolstoy's novel, premiered in Turin and achieved great acclaim, subsequently being performed on many European stages.

Later Career and Notable Works
Returning to Italy in 1914, Franco started working and teaching at the Conservatory of Bologna, eventually becoming its director. In 1923, he assumed the position of director at the Turin Conservatory, and from 1947 to 1950, he served as the director of the Rossini Conservatory in Pesaro.

Among his most famous works, Franco Alfano composed the opera "Cyrano de Bergerac" and "Sakùntala." However, he is best known for completing Giacomo Puccini's opera "Turandot" after the composer's death. This work received significant criticism and sparked great interest in Alfano, surpassing his own compositions.
Legacy and Death
Franco Alfano passed away on October 27, 1954, in San Remo. His contributions to opera and his completion of "Turandot" solidified his reputation as an accomplished composer, pianist, and educator.
