Stump was born in Evanston, Illinois, to folk singer David Stumph and his wife Patricia Vaughn. He grew up in Glenview, Illinois. His parents divorced when he was eight years old. Stump taught himself how to play the guitar and also experimented with playing the drums.

Stump joined 'Fall Out Boy' thanks to Joe Trohman, the current guitarist of the band, whom he met at a bookstore. Initially auditioning as a drummer, Stump eventually became the de facto lead vocalist of the group, despite having no formal vocal training. As the lineup of 'Fall Out Boy' changed multiple times, Stump had to learn various other skills, particularly excelling at rhythm guitar. He eventually started writing music for the band, with bassist Pete Wentz contributing the lyrics to his melodies.

In 2003, Stump and his bandmates signed a contract with Island Records and released a successful debut album. Shortly after, their third studio album, 'From Under the Cork Tree,' surpassed all their previous records, selling 2.5 million copies worldwide and earning double platinum certification. The album debuted at number nine on the Billboard 200, becoming the first 'Fall Out Boy' album to enter the top 10. The single "Sugar, We're Goin Down" achieved significant success, closely followed by "Dance, Dance." In 2005, the band was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best New Artist.

Their fourth album, 'Infinity on High,' also achieved great success, although their next album, 'Folie à Deux,' did not replicate it. In January 2010, Stump announced that he was working on a solo album titled 'Soul Punk.' Later that year, he released his debut solo EP, 'Truant Wave,' under his own label, 'Nervous Breakdance Media.' The EP featured collaborations with artists such as Alph-A-Bit, Om'mas Keith from 'Sa-Ra,' David-Andrew 'D.A.' Wallach from 'Chester French,' and Driis.

Stump's first full-length solo album was released on October 18, 2011. The title of the album alludes to his intention to pay homage to two genres close to his heart: soul and punk.
